The History of Grace
The History of Grace

Back in 1994, the seeds of Grace Covenant began.   A group of men from Western Carolina began dreaming about having a work in Hickory.  A man named Rev George Norris of Boone, NC answered this call and began leading a small group of dedicated families in study and prayer.  This core group rallied around the scripture found in Colossians 2:7. "rooted and built up in Him, and established in the faith...".   About a year later (1995) God called another man named Rev. Ray Kruntorad to pick up where Rev. Norris began.  He became organizing pastor of this new work in Hickory.  In October, 1995, after much prayer, the mission church became know as Grace Covenant Church.

On November 5, 1995 the first worship service was held.  In those days Grace worshipped at Viewmont Elementary School.  It was a great season for Grace!  Folks came to Jesus and lives were changed!  God continued to bless Grace Covenant with excitement and enthusiasm for what God was doing.   God even provided 25 acres of land located on North Center Street...where the present facility is today.  By November 1997, Grace Covenant became an official 'church' of our denomination, the PCA.

In 1999, the elders of Grace began dreaming about having a building.  Once again, the Lord provided.  On January 2, 2000, Grace Covenant ushered in the new millennium by holding a ground breaking ceremony on the property where she stands today.  On November 19, 2000 Grace Covenant held it's first worship service in the new facility.

From 2000 on God continued to amaze Grace Covenant.  They began to grow numerically and spiritually. People were introduced to Jesus and lives continued to be changed.    Men who were lost, were found by God...and some even became elders!   The message of the gospel was always there as Grace sought to make God's name great.    At the helm of this work was a faithful and beloved pastor, Pastor Ray Kruntorad who continued to serve until 2012.  Grace was truly blessed by Pastor Ray's long and faithful service!

In 2012, Pastor Ray retired from Grace Covenant.   In 2013, Pastor Mike Gordon was called to become Grace's second senior pastor.  Pastor Mike came to Grace as a young pastor who left a PCA church in Greenville, NC.  Pastor Mike has a love for the gospel and truly desires to moves Grace forward as God leads us.

The future is bright for Grace Covenant!    We want to follow God's agenda!   We want to carry on as we making God's name great in Hickory, in our region, and the world!
